The PosHYdon pilot has made its first green hydrogen on Eni’s electrified Q13a-A platform off the Dutch coast, the first offshore site to combine wind power, electrolysis and gas production at sea.
The PosHYdon pilot has produced its first green hydrogen on a working offshore platform in the Dutch North Sea, Fuel Cells Works reported on 24 July 2026. The step makes it the first site to bring together offshore wind power, hydrogen production and natural gas operations at sea.
The hydrogen is made on Eni Energy Netherlands’ Q13a-A platform, about 13km off Scheveningen. Q13a-A is the first fully electrified oil and gas platform in the Dutch sector of the North Sea. That electrification lets the platform run an electrolyser without diesel or gas-fired power on the deck.
The plant uses offshore wind electricity to turn seawater into demineralised water, then splits that water into hydrogen and oxygen by electrolysis. At full output it can make up to 400kg of green hydrogen a day. The gas is blended into the platform’s existing gas pipeline and sent ashore, which avoids building a dedicated hydrogen line for the trial.
The pilot will first hold stable production, then test how the electrolyser copes with the swings in power that come with wind. That is the harder engineering problem, because industrial electrolysers usually run on a steady supply and can degrade under rapid changes in load.
Offshore platforms are energy-intensive and face decommissioning as fields run down. Making hydrogen on existing structures offers a way to reuse that infrastructure and to bring renewable energy ashore as a molecule rather than a cable. For hard-to-abate industry, low-carbon hydrogen is a candidate for high-temperature process heat and a feedstock for ammonia and refining.
PosHYdon is a demonstrator, not a commercial plant, and its 400kg-a-day output is small against industrial demand. Its value is the operating data on running electrolysis in a marine setting, which developers will need before scaling offshore hydrogen for industrial buyers.
